We started off playing up the side of a cliff, allowing us to play a genuine backs-to-the-wall effort as Spurley went desperately seeking a goal. The first 10-15 minutes were fairly even, and new boy Jack, taking an unfamiliar position up front led most of Rockets attacks, with some excellent chasing, and calm approach as he continually looked up to find a teammate. Spurley dominated the first half after that, though, and unusually for Rockets, every attempt from Spurley to shoot was either blocked by a defensive tackle, or saved by keeper Dan, who had an excellent game, with safe hands throughout. Twice he was beaten, only for Matt S and Sam to clear off the line. We went in at halftime well-pleased with the 0-0 scoreline, perhaps even a little unlucky for Olly not to score (although that would have taken the mick somewhat!). Playing towards the cliff was obviously going to be easier in the second half.
It was a fleeting thought, however, and Spurley came back with an even better attacking performance as the Rockets defence was peppered. All that meant was that Rockets raised their game once more, with Matt S, Michael and Matt joined by Sam, whose sense of positioning and recovery was superb. Niall worked his socks off in midfield, and James and Harris showed some great vision and passes as we occasionally got to the halfway line. It had to come, and Spurley (deservedly!) went a goal up 3 minutes from the end. The Rockets spirit showed through, as we piled forward in our best period of play, and Olly was brought down just outside the box. Up stepped Sam to incredibly pull us level with a free-kick of the highest quality. We dared to hope, then, for a victory, but the final whistle came for an unbelievable result.
The entire defence deserved a trophy, whilst the midfield were close behind, and when we did attack, the forwards worked tirelessly, and with a bit more luck, might have notched a couple! But Sam couldn't have bettered his performance, and man-of-the-match was on its way!

Rockets 2 Poynton 5

Usual start - 5 minutes gone and a couple of goals down!!!

Started playing then though, and we really took most of the rest of the half - Olly almost got his 1st ever goal but one of their defenders just caught the ball on its way in - bizarre.

Upshot was we had a penalty which was missed - really we should just have been given a goal - it was so unfair. Anyway, a few minutes later Sam made amends with a superb shot from 20 metres, and we went in at halftime 1-2 down, and really bubbling.

Unforch, of course, another crazy 5 minutes and we were almost immediately 4-1 down! The referee refused to continue after a severe amount of abuse from a Poynton supporter, although their coach did apologise unreservedly, and assured us he'd be taking action.

We continued playing good football though, and Sam found Robbie who blasted our second into the top corner. Poynton scored a fifth after a keeper mixup - final score 5-2, but a performance 10 times better than last week!

James got MoM for a great defensive performance, there were good games also from Robbie and Olly up front (new position there?), Sam in midfield, and Harris at right-back.

Chapeltown 11 Rockets 1

A fantastic last 30 seconds of the match saw Rockets snatch a goal, and if it hadn't been for the ref blowing for fulltime, Chapel would clearly have been on the rack.

A pleasant trip into the hills, where the lovely sunny day highlighted the rolling hills and the stark splendour of the Peak District. Not a snowflake in sight as Rockets took to the field. It did take them 15 minutes to realise they were on the rugby field. which was a bit of a blow, as they were doing quite well until then (i.e. without any opposition).

The match is mostly best forgotten as the rusty Rockets creaked their way through. Callum got MoM for performing well in about 4 different positions, whilst Matt S in goal kept us in the game (!?!).

FCB U12s Rockets -v- Hillgate Boys

Sunday 7 September 2008, Fog Lane Park - <a href="http://www.fcbluestar.net/foglaneparkmap.html">see map</a><div>Arrive 1.15pm for a 2.00pm kick-off</div><div>Our first game of the season. A report will appear here shortly after the match.</div>
